SoFi Checking & Savings Review (2026): Is the Bonus Actually Worth It?

SoFi shows up at the top of both our bank bonuses and brokerage bonuses lists — so it earned its own review. The short version: it's one of the few accounts where the sign-up bonus, the APY, and the fee structure all point the same direction, if you can route a paycheck to it. If you can't, most of the appeal evaporates. Here's the honest breakdown.
The verdict up front
Rating: strong — for the right person. SoFi Checking & Savings is a genuinely good no-fee account with a real cash bonus (up to $400) and a competitive APY — but almost every perk is gated behind direct deposit. Set up direct deposit and it's one of the best accounts going. Skip direct deposit and the APY collapses to a rate you can beat elsewhere.

The bonus, explained (the reason most people are here)
SoFi's cash bonus is tiered and tied entirely to how much direct deposit you bring in during your first 25 days:
- $50 for at least $1,000 in eligible direct deposits, or
- $400 for at least $5,000 in eligible direct deposits
within 25 calendar days of your first eligible direct deposit. The promotion runs through 12/31/26, and it's for members who haven't previously enrolled in direct deposit with SoFi.
Our take on the tiers: The $50 tier is almost free money — one modest paycheck. The $400 tier needs $5,000 through the account in under a month, which is realistic if your full salary lands there but tight if you're only routing part of it. Map your actual paycheck timing to the 25-day window before you start, because the clock starts on your first deposit, not when the money hits $5,000.
What we liked
- Genuinely no fees. No monthly fee, no minimum balance, no overdraft fee, no in-network ATM fee. This is the real deal, not "no fee if you maintain $1,500." For an everyday account, that's the baseline that matters.
- Competitive APY — with direct deposit. With direct deposit, savings earns up to ~3.10% APY (promotional new-member boosts have periodically run higher), and it applies with no minimum balance. That's a strong rate for money you're keeping liquid.
- Bonus + APY + checking in one app. Most high-APY savings accounts don't also give you a spending account and a cash bonus. SoFi bundles them, which is convenient if you want fewer logins.
- Big FDIC coverage. Through its partner-bank network, SoFi extends FDIC insurance up to $3 million — well beyond the standard $250,000 — useful if you park larger balances.
- It stacks with SoFi Invest. If you also open SoFi's brokerage account, that has its own separate stock bonus — two bonuses, one app.
What we didn't like
- The APY cliff without direct deposit. This is the big one. Skip direct deposit (and don't keep $5,000+ in qualifying deposits) and savings drops to ~1.00% APY — below plenty of no-strings high-yield savings accounts. SoFi is excellent with direct deposit and mediocre without it. Be honest with yourself about which you'll actually do.
- No physical branches. It's online-only. If you regularly deposit cash, that's friction — and it costs ~$4.95 per cash deposit at retail partners.
- Overdraft coverage is narrow. The no-fee overdraft coverage (up to $50) only applies to debit-card purchases and requires $1,000+/month in direct deposit. It won't cover checks, bill pay, or P2P transfers.
How SoFi compares
- Vs. a pure high-yield savings account: if you won't set up direct deposit, a no-strings HYSA likely beats SoFi's 1.00% fallback. SoFi wins only when you activate the direct-deposit perks.
- Vs. other bank bonuses: on our bank bonuses list, SoFi ranks #1 for most people precisely because the entry tier ($50 for $1,000) is the lowest-effort real bonus available — but Chase's $400 gives you a longer 90-day window if your paycheck timing is awkward.
- Vs. leaving cash at a big bank: almost always a win. Big-bank checking pays ~0% and charges monthly fees; SoFi pays interest and charges none.
How to actually get the bonus (step by step)
- Confirm you've never enrolled in direct deposit with SoFi (prior enrollees are excluded).
- Open a SoFi Checking & Savings account through the current offer.
- Set up direct deposit with your employer/payroll — a true ACH payroll deposit, not a bank transfer (transfers usually don't count). See what qualifies in our direct-deposit explainer.
- Hit your target tier within 25 days of your first deposit: $1,000 for $50, or $5,000 for $400.
- The bonus posts per SoFi's terms after you qualify. Keep direct deposit active to hold the higher APY.
The fine print worth knowing
- "Eligible direct deposit" means payroll/benefits ACH from an employer, payroll processor, or gig platform — or maintaining $5,000+ in qualifying deposits. Bank-to-bank transfers you push yourself generally don't qualify.
- Prior enrollees excluded — if you've had SoFi direct deposit before, you likely won't qualify for this bonus.
- The bonus is taxable — expect a 1099; it's interest income. (General info, not tax advice.)
- APY is variable and the new-member boost is promotional — the headline rate can change after you open. Always confirm the current rate on SoFi's page.
FAQ
Is SoFi a real bank / is my money safe?
SoFi Bank is FDIC-insured, and through its partner-bank program it extends coverage up to $3 million — above the standard $250,000. For insured balances, it's as safe as any bank.
Do I have to set up direct deposit to use SoFi?
No — but without it, you miss the higher APY, the overdraft coverage, and the cash bonus. The account is only compelling with direct deposit active.
Can I get both the SoFi bank bonus and the SoFi Invest bonus?
They're separate offers on separate products, so generally yes — read each one's terms. See our brokerage bonuses guide for the Invest side.
What counts as a direct deposit for the bonus?
A true ACH payroll or benefits deposit from an employer/payroll processor/gig platform. Self-initiated transfers from another bank usually don't count.
How long until the bonus posts?
Per SoFi's promotion terms after you meet the deposit threshold — confirm the current timeline on their offer page.
